Urban garden on the move
More than a thousand hands came together to build the Skip Garden and Kitchen; a project to create moveable urban gardens that turned into a community project at the heart of the Kings Cross development. Taking disused materials from the construction site, the garden now also has its own cafe, serving food grown on the premises in old skips, and provides ample opportunity for youth and local engagement. ‘Generators’, as young participants are called, learn skills such as growing their own fruit, transforming it into jam, and then selling it on to customers.
Just next to the London Pond Club, the UK’s first man-made freshwater swimming pond, the gardens and cafe are an urban oasis, providing interest and provoking curiosity into the natural world amidst the busy city.
That’s not to say that the gardens shun technology though. Be sure to download the digital trail app that teaches you all about bees, and leads you around areas that have been cultivated to allow them to flourish in part of the busiest areas of the capital city.
