Gallery in a crypt
Where 19th century burial meets 21st century art, you’ll find the Crypt Gallery, one of the capital’s most unique exhibition spaces. Used also as an air raid shelter in both World Wars, the layers of history here add not only to the narrative but also to the ambience.
A frame of tall, imposing caryatids (that’s stone ladies to those not in the know) lend the building a sense of grandeur, before leading you down into the long, narrow tunnels. Alongside the resting places of 557 people from the 1800s, exhibitions rotate here regularly. Selected for their philosophical value; provoking questions of humanity, the Crypt encourages art and artists and has done since opening in 2002.
